Is there a way to use the smart image processor (or some other image resize extension) to resize images on the client side before uploading? This would greatly reduce upload time.

I don't think that you can use SIP on the client's computer. Maybe you can use the components (DLL files) togehter with Visual Basic but then it has nothing to do anymore with the SIP.

I've wrote once in Delphi an application that fills in a database on my server. With textboxes, textfields and images... you can think about writing such an application.
