Hi,
I'm having a problem connecting to a site via DWMX as administrator. I have tested on different servers (e-windows) as well but get the same error message:

'Dreamweaver could not connect to the remote server. You cannot perform Contribute admin tasks without a connection to a remote server....'

I am connected to the site and it actualy reconnects itself before this message appears. I have switched off my firewall, and tried many connection/root alternatives, but get the same error regardless?

I'm using the path 'www.domainname.com' as the site root URL in the advanced panel of the site definition > contribute area, is this correct?

Any feedback much appreciated.

i only used contribute once (was impressed tbh)

the path to your files on the web host do they sit in another folder maybe HTDOCS, or WWW or something like that. coz i remember i had to have my url like www.myname.com/htdocs/ and then it would see my files.

give that a shot.

Dave

Thanks for the feedback dave. I'm actualy trying to admin contribute from DWMX, not directly from contribute. Using contribute is fine, no problem, but I'm trying to get the 'admin web site' fetaure functioning in dwmx in the site definition > advanced > contribute section of dwmx.

If anyone has any other ideas, much appreciated.

Thanks for that Noz, the version is the latest contribute 2. I'm not sure if this makes any difference as I'm trying to use DWMX to admin?
I could of course buy my own version of C2 to admin, but if I can save £70 I will !

I've tried many different root URL's without any success.

Has anyone else managed to admin a contribute site from DWMX ? Just knowing it works would be a ray of light !

Yes, Richard. It does work <img src=../images/dmxzone/forum/icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

Clicking 'admin web site' button is actually trying to read contribute.xml file, which is placed in _mm directory that DW/CT look for first in your site root. If DW/CT cannot find _mm directrory and then the xml file, it may prompt you that you cannot connect to the Contribute site.

Also, you can look in the contribute.xml file to see if the site root you are specifying in the Contribute settings within Dreamweaver is included.

Do you get any other error messages?

Hi Noz,
Appreciate your advice here.
I don't have any _mm folders created in my site root and I've searched for 'contribute.xml' and not found it? I've tried setting up other contribute sites to see if somethings wrong with that particular site, but I get same error. There are no other errors just : 'Dreamweaver could not connect to the remote server. You cannot perform Contribute admin tasks without a connection to a remote server....'

I'm a bit stumped. Any more ideas or details on how and who creates the contribute.xml file would be appreciated.

Hmm...

<ul><li> Check the access permission within Admin tasks in Contribute. Do you have enough permission to all the directories and files in your site for Admin group?</li><li>

Also, if you are using a same directory as the remote and the local root folder, setting up DW to admin Contribute site deletes contribute.xml due to conflict. So if you are developping your site locally and testing it locally, make sure you have seperate directories to specify for remote and local root folder.</li><li>

If you are connecting to the remote site over LAN, make sure that the remote site is set to be shared and have appropriate access permission for clients including yourself.
</li>

</ul>

These are what I can think of right at this moment, but I'll certainly try find something more if none of above doesn't work...

Hi Noz,
I'm about to launch this site, so I'm going to create a new site in DW and apply all your suggestions to see what happens.

I'll keep you posted and thanks again very much. Please have a pint on me at lunchtime!

seen this on a support link @ macromedia

Note: Contribute Administration functionality has been moved from Dreamweaver into Contribute. You must have Contribute 2 installed on the same machine as Dreamweaver MX 2004 in order to administer Contribute sites in Dreamweaver.

Separating Contribute administration from Dreamweaver provides important development advantages for both products. By separating the administration feature (keeping it only in Contribute), the development teams can focus on building new features for Contribute and Dreamweaver and releasing new versions as frequently as needed. Customers who have both Dreamweaver MX 2004 and Contribute 2 installed will find that the workflow and user experience for accessing these features is the same as before

If you have DMX04, you will not have feature to administer Contribute site as stated in the quote in Dave's posting. In that case, you'll need Contribute 2 installed on the same system as DMX04 installed.

If you use DMX 6.1, the feature is there to administer Contribute site(regardless of CT version).

Did this problem ever get resolved. I am experiencing similar difficulties with DW8 and Contribute 3.11. It used to work fine but now I get the error: "Dreamweaver could not launch Macromedia Contribute to administer the site. Please check the Contribute installation." I have not made any changes I can think of that might cause this. I affects all the sites I run this way. I have tried re-installing Contribute and running everything on a different workstation (one using Vista, the other WinXP) but always with the same result. Screen shot attached. <img src="www.route22.co.uk/images/dw8contribute.gif" border=0>
