Creating administration function for web content

Hello! Looking for some information about the possible design and tools needed for creating an administration function for a web site's content managers. This is pretty general but maybe an example will explain it further. Have just visited macromedia.com and they showcased a site for renting apartments on the web. They mentioned an administration module which would allow the content managers to update the database and add new images or whatever but they did not get into the details of this function.
Have set up some previous sites with administrator type functions but looking for design possibilities concerning say image updates to a database by users with no background technically.
For example, what tools are needed for them to add an image stored on their local machine to the database or replace an existing one with a newer version. Would something like Pure ASP Upload come into play here? Can anybody recommend any web based tutorials for explaining this? Would the updates be in place or would you write the updates to a temporary copy of the database and batch the updates to a production database overnight or something like that?
Performing the research stage now so any recommendations or tips would be helpful. The current environment is UD 4.0 with ASP/VB script with an Access 2000 database but would move up to an SQL Server if needed to satisfy the demand for high volume. Thanks!

yes, pure asp upload is what you want here... also the PD online HTML editor.
