When sorting database records, I would like certain records to show up first. Is it documented anywhere, which special characters will appear before the letter A?

that's a great question... and unfortunately not one that I've seen answered in the past. I think your best bet is to do some testing.
-make a test database with some of the characters in question.
-order a query by that field and voila, your answer.
