I've just started using Fireworks and seem to have lost my Text Edit box. When I select the Text tool, I can enter text directly onto to the page but don't get the edit box, just a bounding box and a hand symbol. I can't save text. The only key that works is "esc" that exits from text input.
Anyone any ides how I can rstore the Text edit box?

Not quite sure what you've managed to do ???

But try selecting the text once, just so you can see it is selected with a turquoise (default) border.
Then go to the Text menu you should be able to choose Editor from there.
