Hi I would like to create a menu in my left colum nav bar. Basically, the menu consists of 5 parent topics, if you click on one of the topics, the menu slides down revealing sub topics and pushes the parent topics down as well. If you click on the topic again the menu would slide back up. I hope this makes sense thanks!

You can do this with DHTML. Go to some DHTML site (dhtmlshock.com for example) and search for it.
