After many many hours of trying to get a connection to my database on my isp through a connection string they string they gave me i actually thought i was getting somewhere when i got a new error message

Vbscript Runtime error 'ASP 0185 : 424'
Object required

/result.asp,line 19

is this still something to do with not correctly connecting to the mysql database or am i just being completely daft and doing everything wrong

unfortunately, there's not much I can tell you from the info you gave, but the error message should be enough to help you.

just look at line 19, and you'll probably see a misspelled variable or something.

"Object expected" error messages aren't the worst thing that could happen because they are not a runtime error, they're more like a "Compile error" (I know asp isn't compiled, but it's an error that would get past a compiler)

WEll I am new to the ASP Ultra Dev sceene also, and let me say that you get use to the errors. but what I am wondering is areyou trying to use PHP?
