Encrypted passwords in a database

I need to encrypt passwords as they are stored in a database and decrypt them when the user logs in.  Can anyone help?

I use a SQL server database for handling user information (username, password etc) for our corporate intranet.  At present, the passwords are stored in the database in plain text.  Is there an extension which can encrypt them as the user adds/updates a password, and decrypts them when the user logs in.

I seem to remember seeing something about an extension which does this somewhere, but I can't find anything about it by searching here or the Macromedia Exchange.  Does anyone know of an existing extenstion or can anyone provide one?
